Rajyavardhan Singh Rathod, who had also participated in the Kargil war against Pakistan in 1999, later tried his hand at shooting.  Colonel Rathod was the first Indian athlete to win a silver in the Olympics.  Vijay Kumar, who won the country's first medal in pistol shooting, learned the nuances of the game in Mhow's Army Marksmanship Unit ie AMU.  Vijay Kumar, who retired from the rank of Subedar Major in the Dogra Regiment, was later given the rank of Honorary Captain.
